Days 1-2 Bangkok
You can arrive at the joining-point hotel in Bangkok at any time on day 1, as there are no activities planned, apart from our group meeting and dinner afterwards. Please note arrival airport transfers are included, so please advise flight details at time of booking and there will be a representative from our local partner Tourismo Thai to meet you at the airport and transfer you to our hotel. For those who arrive early, please refer to the noticeboard in the hotel for things to see around Bangkok, and ask for a map from hotel reception. You will see a notice from your leader to inform you of the time and place to meet for the group meeting. On day 2 we hop in a longtail boat for our exploration of Bangkok's canals. If you like, your leader can help you buy bread from floating salespeople so that you can feed the hungry fish! We also take a tour of Wat Pho, visiting the amazing 46m-long reclining Buddha - one of the largest in the world. Please note that your leader will collect your local payment (8500 baht per person) today. Day 3 Ayuthaya From Bangkok we transfer to the nearby city of Ayuthaya (approximately 1 hour by minibus), situated on the Chao Phraya River. Ayuthaya was once a booming Siamese royal capital and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are numerous ancient ruins, fascinating temples and interesting museums and we have plenty of time to explore. While the kids play hide-and-seek, parents can learn the history of this fascinating site. The rest of the afternoon is free before we board an overnight train north to Chiang Mai (approximately 13 hours). Days 4-6 Chiang Mai Arriving early in the morning, we have 3 full days to appreciate cosmopolitan Chiang Mai. We visit the hilltop temple of Doi Suthep and in the evening head to the colourful night market for great food and a huge array of handicrafts. On day 5 we visit the Elephant Conservation Centre near Lampang (approximately 45 minutes), where we can watch elephants have a communal bathing session and see young and old elephants being trained before we enjoy an unforgettable ride through the forest. Day 6 is free to explore Chiang Mai. There are loads of optional activities to keep you fully occupied and having fun during the rest of our time in Chiang Mai. You could take a boat trip down the river to visit nearby rural areas, head out of town to some hot springs, attend a Thai cooking school, try out a traditional massage, hire bicycles to ride around town ... and more! Your leader will let you know the options and help you arrange the activities you are interested in. Days 7-9 Soppong This morning we travel by minibus (approximately 5 hours) to Soppong which is located in an isolated area surrounded by limestone mountain scenery. We spend the next 3 nights here. For day 8 we have a full-day trek planned, exploring the local countryside with a visit to a local village. (Other activities can be arranged if trekking is not for you or the kids.) We have the option to stay overnight in one of the local villages. The following day is free - you may choose to explore the huge and spectacular cave systems that contain rivers and waterfalls along with coffins that date back thousands of years, go for a swim in the river or explore the nearby Shan village. Day 10 Bangkok On day 10 a short bus ride (approximately 2 hours) takes us to Mae Hong Son in time to catch our flight to Bangkok. After our transfer back to the hotel we have some free time for sightseeing, shopping, relaxing or maybe just getting some clothes washed! Days 11-13 Ko Samet A 3-hour minivan journey and a short ferry ride lands us on the beautiful island of Ko Samet. Here we spend 3 nights, which we fill by exploring the numerous white sand beaches by foot or boat, swimming, snorkelling or participating in water sports of almost every description. In the evenings we can sample some of the most amazing food Thailand has to offer and maybe catch a fire-dancing show. We take a boat trip around the island, taking the chance to try our hand at fishing, or just laze the day away. The famous coral reefs of Ko Talu are a marvel and it is a must to immerse yourselves in the colours and sights of this amazing undersea world! Days 14-15 Bangkok Back on the ferry and bus, we head back to Bangkok for a final night in this thriving metropolis. Your leader can also give you other ideas of what to do if you have spare time on day 15. Places like Jim Thompson's House, the Grand Palace and Chinatown are all great to explore. There's a fantastic array of transport options available for getting around this traffic-choked city - it's most efficient to stick to the canals, river and Skytrain, but a trip in a tuk tuk is also loads of fun! You are free to depart at any time on day 15 as no activities are planned.
