Day 1 Ulaan Baatar
Day 1 is arrival day and our fellow travellers will be joining us from different parts of the world. Note that your group leader will collect your local payment (USD200) at the group meeting on Day 1. Please bring new USD bills/notes in large denominations. As Mongolia used to be a Russian protectorate, Ulaan Baatar boasts an interesting range of architecture. The city offers some wonderful contrasts as nomads on horseback ride down the wide streets lined with classic Russian architecture. There are plenty of things to do in UB (as it is popularly known), check out the Museum of Natural History with its excellent dinosaur display, the fine arts museum with its great selection of local art and traditional works in a well laid out area, the Winter Palace Museum of Bogd Khan, which is stocked full of fascinating artefacts, and the impressive Ganden Monastery. Day 2 Amarbayasgalant Monastery We have a bumpy 340km-drive to the remote Amarbayasgalant Monastery on Day 2 (approximately 8 hours). The Monastery is Mongolia's second most important place of worship. Recently refurbished after being desecrated during revolutionary times, it is now back to its former magnificence. Days 3-4 Selenge River We continue to the beautiful Selenge river via Bulgan (approximately 8 hours' drive) to enjoy the magnificent surroundings. We can also partake in some of the excellent fishing and bird watching in this area. Days 5-7 Khovsgol Lake It's a long drive today (approximately 14 hours) but Khovsgol Lake is Mongolia's most beautiful destination. This pristine wilderness area is home to many ethnic minorities and it boasts spectacular scenery with stunning fur forests, lush green grasslands and meadows teeming with wildflowers. Days 8-10 Khorgo We drive 300km (approximately 11 hours) to Khorgo, over 2 days. A natural volcanic lake surrounded by rocky mountains provides a surreal landscape. Climb one of the mountains for spectacular views. Day 11 Tsetserleg On Day 11 we stay in the small provincial town of Tsetserleg, situated in the valley of the Delger River. The hot spa here is a real treat and the region offers vistas of remote, untouched beauty. Day 12 Karakorum On Day 12 we drive 3 hours to the ancient capital of Karakorum. Kublai Khan once ruled here before moving the capital to Beijing. We visit the first Buddhist centre of Mongolia, the impressive Erdenezuu Monastery. Day 13 Khogno Khan The rocky Khogno Khan mountains provide relief from the flat landscape. Spend some time hikikng the mountains, keeping an eye peeled for wildlife, or visit an age-old temple on the mountainside where a fortune teller can often be found. To better understand the process, you will need a guide to translate. Optional horse and camel riding is available. Day 14 Gobi Desert The majority of Mongolia's population live away from the city. On Day 14 we head out into the endless countryside to spend a night in a Mongolian 'ger' (tent) camp. Accompanied by a local Mongolian guide, we set off on a walk across the vast steppes, including a small taste of the Gobi Desert. The terrain includes some rolling hills but is mainly flat. Days 15-16 Ulaan Baatar We travel back across the rolling grasslands to Ulaan Baatar (260km, approximately 6 hours) past 'ovoos' (roadside shrines) and ger suburbs. There is time to shop for souvenirs and luxurious cashmere, check out some more of the city's sights or maybe even catch a wrestling match or cultural performance. You are free to depart at any time during Day 16 as no activities are planned.Make a booking on-line with Drifters, Simply make a selection from the available dates in the dropdown box and click book now.
