Days 1-3 Tokyo

As travellers are arriving from all over the world, there are no activities planned for day 1. You will be expected to attend a group meeting in the evening - your group leader will leave a notice for you at the hotel with the exact time and place. Please note that your leader will collect your local payment (11,000JPY) at the group meeting today.

Tokyo is the dynamic modern hub of an ancient land. The contradictions are everywhere, as high-tech gadgetry and neon lights are an integral part of life for a population steeped in tradition. You have plenty of time to explore this dynamic city. We recommend visiting Ueno Park for its galleries and museums, Senso-ji temple or the sumo stables.

On day 3 we catch the train to Nikko (approx 2 hours).

Days 4-5 Nikko

Arriving in Nikko we can appreciate the unique countryside that makes Japan such a fabulous destination. Nikko has been a sacred site since the middle of the 8th Century and the shrines and temples dotted throughout the area are inspiring evidence of this. A visit to Toshu-gu Shrine in particular is highly recommended. The best way to get to know Nikko is to simply explore at your own pace. You can go up to Chuzenji Lake and Yumoto for hiking and natural springs (and even optional skiing if the weather permits!).

Returning to Tokyo (2 hours) on the evening of day 5, we jump on another train to the hot spring region of Hakone (approx. 1 hour).

Days 6-7 Hakone

On day 6, take a boat across Lake Ashino-ko followed by a picturesque cable car journey over the surrounding mountains (approx. 2-3 hrs). We may be lucky to sneak a peak at a postcard view of Mt. Fuji looming in the distance. Mt Fuji is very shy though, so getting a glimpse is not guaranteed. For those who are keen, bathing in the outdoor onsens is a real highlight for the area. Remember that no clothes or swimming costumes are allowed in the hot springs - time to shed those inhibitions!

Again returning to Tokyo in transit (1 hour) we make another short train journey to Kamakura (1.5 hours) on the evening of day 7.

Day 8 Kamakura

This former capital (1185 - 1333 AD) with a history of over 3000 years was the center of Japanese culture around 900 years ago. Kamakura's Buddhist temples and shrines are a window in to Japan's past. Zen temples surround the town and are mostly within walking distance. Your included bus pass gives you access out to the Fuji viewing area by the sea and the Buddha Grotto walk - not to be missed!

We return late on day 8 from Kamakura to Tokyo (1.5 hours).

Day 9 Tokyo

No visit to Tokyo would be complete without experiencing the shopping mecca of Ginza. Gawk at galleries or eye the electronics in one of the world's most dynamic cities.
